Man könnte meinen, dass sich die Bezeichnung Aethna auf den darüber eingezeichneten Vulkan bezieht und nicht als Straßenstation zu interpretieren ist. Hinweise darauf wären etwa die fehlende Meilenzahl zwischen Aethna und dem ausgefallenen Catania. Mit Blick ins Itinerar 93,6 erkennt man jedoch, dass es sich um eine Straßenstation auf halbem Weg zwischen Catanie und Centurippa handeln muss, ausgefallen ist die Meilenzahl XII zwischen Aethna und Catania (siehe It). In der Antike ist der Ort als Hybla Gereatis bekannt.
