III Aug., römische Kolonie, durch Trajan, am Bagradas, in der Nähe seiner Quellen, Anfangspunkt mehrerer südöstlich nach der römischen Provinz Afrika laufenden Straßen; j. Tebessa. Datierung (Barrington): Theveste – Hellenistic/Roman/Late Antique (AAA 29.101; Lepelley 1981, 185-89) RE: Theveste Stadt in N-Afrika VI A.1 249-252 Treidler, Hans. Eintrag DGRG: THEVESTE (Θεουέστη, Ptol. 4.3.30), an important town of Numidia, but which is only mentioned in the later writers. It was a Roman colony (Gruter, Inscr. p. 600; Itin. Ant. p. 27), and the place where many roads running in a SE. direction into the Roman province of Africa, had their commencement. (Cf. ltin. Ant. pp. 33, 46, 47, 53, 54.) It is the town of Tebessa, recently discovered by General Negrier, considerable ruins of which still exist, especially the ancient walls, the circumference of which indicates a town capable of containing 40,000 inhabitants. (See Letronne, in Rev. Archéol. iv. p. 360, sqq.; Sur l`Arc de Triomphe de Teveste, &c., Paris, 1847; Jahn`s Jahrbücher, lii. p. 409.) BV 2,21,19), einer der wichtigsten Straßenknotenpunkte in Nordafrika, 38 km sw von Ammaedara, h. Tébessa mit bedeutenden ant. Überresten (u. a. Caracalla-Bogen). Th. wurde 247 v. Chr. von Hanno [6] d.Gr. erobert ([1. 71; 246 Anm. 232]; Pol. 1,73,1; Diod. 4,18,1; 24,10,2; Amm. 17,4,2 f.). Seit Traianus war Th. colonia. Die von Vandali und Berbern (Berberisch) zerstörte Stadt wurde unter Iustinianus [1] I. wiederaufgebaut.
