Valence (Dép. Drôme), z.Z. Caesars [1; 4. 300] gegr. röm. Kolonie [1] am Rhodanus (h. Rhône), wegen ihrer Lage an schiffbarem Gewässer und der Straße von Vienna (Vienne) nach Arausio (Orange) bedeutender Verkehrsknotenpunkt. Über die Gesch. von V. in röm. Zeit ist wenig bekannt [2; 3]. Seit E. des 2. Jh. ist das Christentum für V. belegt [2. 39; 5]. Luftaufnahmen haben Elemente einer Zenturiation (Feldmesser) und des Stadtplanes nachgewiesen [2]. Ant. Überreste: äußere Theatermauer, cardo maximus, Stadtmauer und Turmfundamente. Inschr. belegen Kulte für Kybele sowie Mercurius (CIL XII 1744 f.) und weisen auf ein Mithraeum (CIL XII 1746; Mithras).
